Human Computer Interaction (HCI) is one of the things one has to take at graduate level in Canada and USA and I am sure even Europe.
When I throw up a tantrum at some of my friends about their websites, it is because as a human, I cannot watch things flashing on a website.
Just in case you did not know, the average human spends only 2-5 seconds on a website. They will spend more time if the website does not annoy them.
Generally, a website should have all the advertising running on the left side if you are English speaking since we read from Left to right. If you are from an Arabic country, make the ads run on the left side as they read right to left.
Whatever you do, do not put ads as center on your page because you will lose more traffic than you know. I hope you read my article on Analytics.
Websites need to be clean. We know you all need advertising money. This then becomes a challenger for your company. Do you want to slap the Ads in my face as soon as I go on your website? Chances are 99% that I will shut it down and never visit it again.
Colours are crucial for your website. Always use a white background. All your pictures should have a white background. It shows up much better on computers and phones.
Colours for writing. Avoid writing in RED unless someone is dying. Red is a very intimidating colour and this is the reason we do not wear it for job interviews. Write in black on a white background. Failing that, then write in blue which is proven to be a very calming colour.
I do not hate yellow because of dictator #Museveni. This is one of the most horrific colours to use on the internet and it shows up even uglier on computers and smart phones. I insist that you use blue.
