Former agriculture minister and Kabale NRM chairperson, Hope Mwesigye, says President Yoweri Museveni is not sure of victory in 2016 elections.
“Museveni is planning to declare a state of emergency because he is not sure of victory in 2016,” she told Democratic Party leaders on Wednesday.
DP leaders gathered at Sharing Hall Nsambya and endorsed Amama Mbabazi, Hope’s in-law, as president in 2016 elections.
Hope revealed to the meeting that Museveni no longer enjoys the massive support in western Uganda and had been the case.
“We will defeat Museveni,” she emphasised.
She clarified: “We are planning for a 1st round win not a re-run.”
Hope co-leads the NRM Go Forward Pro-change pressure group under JPAM which was curved out of the ruling party.
It was Hope who encouraged Mbabazi to join the opposition coalition in order to maximise chances of defeating the incumbent who fired Amama as Prime Minister and NRM Secretary General.
“Amama Mbabazi was Prime Minister and leader of government business in Parliament,” she reminded those who were blaming the ex-PM for the mess in Museveni’s government.
“Museveni as a leader of government controls the budget and therefore carries all the blame.”
Hope said Uganda was not a poor country but that resources were being misused.
Hope told a DP meeting that Go Forward manifesto spells out how resources can be re-allocated to sectors of benefit to citizens other than security.
She asked the leaders to rally behind Amama and return the country to the right path for economic development and social transformation.
DP Secretary General, Mathias Nsubuga, called on members to endorse Amama saying they had chances with him to defeat Museveni once and for all.
