Forum for Democratic Change politician Apollo Kantinti says the mysterious hooded goons who beat up Kizza Besigye’s supporters are known to the police force.
Dressed in black t-shirts, the thugs were seen standing shoulder-to-shoulder will police men and beating up boda boda motorcyclists who were escorting Besigye out of his Kasangati home enroute Kampala.
Police has since denied links to the thugs and said it was investigating them.
“Police is investigating themselves. They are hoodwinking us until the matter of the goons is no longer a front-page issue,” Kantinti shot out while appearing on NBS television on Friday.
He said the goons that beat up Kizza Besigye supporters had batons, pepper spray and were even part of police convoy trailing Besigye.
“Where did the goons who beat up Besigye supporters get the pepper spray? How did they get on the road with a numberless car?”
“Police is abetting organised crowd. They can’t stop Kizza Besigye supporters from cheering so they are using goons.”
He said by police denying links with the goons, they are diluting the matter even by saying they are investigating.
“How many members of the KIBOOKO squad were ever paraded or tried? And police is promising a report on these masked goons?”
He wondered how police that besieged Kizza Besigye’s home for weeks could now they failed to pick up on intelligence on goons prior.
Deputy government spokesperson Col Shaban Bantariza who appeared on the same show said the state would defeat the goons.
The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has also promised to investigate the goons.
Meanwhile, Kantinti also spoke on former Amama Mbabazi’s bodyguard Christopher Aine.
He said Aine should be prosecuted together with others for beating up police officers on duty.
“It’s not a matter of discussion. Gen. Saleh should hand over Aine to the police and answer for the crimes he committed.”
Bantariza on the other hand said: “If Christopher Aine ran away with criminal charges, then let the court take action.”
