A number of Police and Uganda Peoples Defence Forces- UPDF officers have besieged the cultural institution of Rwenzururu in Kasese town following the military operations that started on Thursday in Rwenzori region.

According to our reporters in the area, there has been firing of live bullets citizens rush in hiding.

The security officers have pitched camp outside the royal palace of Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu since last night and Kasese town is now having several patrol vehicles moving left and right.

Several others are deployed at the royal hill behind the palace of Charles Wesley Mumbere, the cultural head of Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu.

Early this week, at least eight people are reported dead and four others arrested following an operation conducted by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) with the help of police in Kabarole District in Rwenzori sub region.

The eight were killed on November 24 and are said to be part of the gang that has been terrorising residents in Kabarole.
Authorities say they have been launching their attacks from areas of Karangula.
Several camps said to be owned by the yet to be identified assailants were also razed down.
“The attackers are not yet identified.  They are gangs. If you remember just recently , schools were closed, a health centre closed and they were scaring people so we thought we should take action,” said UPDF spojesperson Col Paddy Ankunda.
According to Ankunda, the operation follows several complaints from residents whose animals, good, among other property were either destroyed or stolen by the said gang.
“Just recently, one of our soldier who had gone on leave was attacked and killed by some people said to be part of the gang,” Ankunda added.
