The Minister for Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Museveni says government will pay all the salary arrears of the non-teaching staff of public universities in October.
Presenting a statement to Parliament, Tuesday, 09th August 2016, hon. Janet Museveni said that following discussions with the non-teaching staff, their strike will be called off on Thursday, 11th August 2016.
“Government is committed to paying all the arrears of the non-teaching staff arising out of their omission in the salary increase in the financial year 2015/2016,” she said.
Mrs Museveni added that the salary structures of these staff are not uniform in all public universities and therefore, need harmonisation.
“It is recommended that a tripartite technical team comprising of the Ministry of Public Service, Education and Sports and Finance holds consultations to agree on how to harmonise the salary scales across public universities,” she added.
The Minister also revealed that the July salaries for the staff in these universities have been released for payment.
“Accounting officers are directed to pay these salaries as the discussions continue with all the stakeholders,” she noted.
Non-teaching staff in public universities have been on strike for two weeks now over the failure by government to pay their arrears and also streamline their salaries.
In another development, Mrs Museveni also said that the Ministry of Education has ordered the closure of Bridge International Schools in Uganda for failure to meet the education standards set.
She added that the infrastructural and hygiene standards were found wanting.
Mrs. Museveni says the directive takes effect when the second term closes at the end of August.
