Government has started reviewing the National Youth Policy as one of the strategies of combating the escalating unemployment in the country.
This was revealed by the Prime Minister, Rt.Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda during the Prime Minister’s Question Time on Wednesday.
It was in response to Ntungamo Municipality MP, Hon. Gerald Karuhanga’s question about government’s action to combat the escalating youth unemployment.
Rt. Hon. Rugunda said that there is a strategy for re-skilling youths so they acquire skills for employment and also start their own projects.
“There are so many institutions that are not skilling the youth well. We are therefore, enabling them with better skills so that they are able to get work or acquire employment for themselves,” said Dr. Ruhakana.
The Premier added that the Youth Livelihood Fund and support to women are some of the projects that are also aimed at ensuring that unemployment is tackled.
“Government is fully committed to this challenge and working on both short and long term measures to deal with the problem of unemployment”, he said.
Rugunda also said that Operation Wealth Creation is another major response to enable youth do something on the land or venture into other areas of gainful employment.
