The 5th October, every year, commemorates the teaching profession’s contribution to educating the children of the world.
Uganda joins the rest of the International Community to celebrate teachers who are at the heart of Public and Private Education in this country.
“Our teachers continue to work with our children, to think critically, process and analyse information from several sources, work cooperatively, tackle problems and make informed choices,” said Dr.Rose Nassali, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education and Sports.
She said teachers empower students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the 21st century.
“Through our teachers’ efforts and creativity, teachers inspire our children to launch out into the deep and to move beyond their horizons in order to achieve their goals and aspirations. Good teaching results in ensuring that we, as a Nation, have knowledgeable and forward looking citizens who can assume the mantle of leadership in the future.”
Education is recognized all over the world as the most important driver of economic growth and social change.
Education is therefore the means to eliminating inequality in society, reducing poverty, and fostering peace.
All over the world, quality education offers hope and the promise of a better standard of living for a Nation.
World Teachers Day gives everyone an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of teachers across the globe, and to recognize great teachers who are continually working with children and transforming them into the future leaders of the Nation.
“We call upon all stakeholders to create an enabling environment for our teachers and provide them with adequate quality training.”
World Teachers’ Day calls for the need to raise the status of the teaching profession for the benefit of teachers, learners and for society as a whole.
“Our teachers need and deserve our support to carry out their work. It is therefore fitting that this year’s World Teachers’ Day theme is, “Valuing Teachers, improving their status.”
The celebrations are ongoing at the Lugogo Cricket Oval.
The Guest of Honour is His Excellency the President of the Republic of Uganda [Yoweri Museveni].
