Government of Uganda to increase surveillance and deportation of illegal immigrants in the country.
This is due to an increase of illegal immigration in the country whereby most of them are involved in petty retail trade.
“This financial year we have received an additional 400 million shillings for our operations. We have therefore deployed over 70 immigration officers in the 9 regions of the Directorate and facilitated all 9 regional offices with new vehicles to clampdown on the illegal immigrants,” said Mr. Kamugisha Ludovic, Assistant Commissioner of Legal and Inspections.
He added that due to the vigilance of the institution, they have over the years from the financial years 2010/2011 -2015/2016 deported 1936 illegal immigrants with a specification of 402 in 2015/2016.
The additional funding is bound to enable them to become more effective and efficient at carrying out their work.
Mr. Kamugisha called upon the public to be vigilant and get involved in the exercise by giving them information about illegal immigrants.
He also confirmed commitment to working with all relevant stakeholders as this matter needs a multi-sectorial approach in order for their team to succeed.
He finally urged media to work with them so as to create an illegal free environment in the bid to protect citizenry.
