Mr David Mushabe, Lawyer to Gen David Sejusa has lashed out at government claiming that the move to arrest his client is out of panic after the General publicly proclaimed support for opposition candidate Kizza Besigye.
“The ruling party is in panic mood. Two weeks to elections and you arrest a general who has publicly come out in support of Besigye?’ Mr Mushabe posed.
Mr Mushabe also said he was angered by the fact that Gen Sejusa was not allowed prior access to his lawyers despite efforts to reach him.
“We spent 3 hours outside Makindye Barracks but were denied access to our client. Even terrorists at Guantanamo have access to lawyers! It is not unique that a general was arrested. What is unique is that Gen. Sejusa was denied access to his lawyer,” he said.
Speaking on NBS television on Monday morning, Mr Mushabe also accused the army of selectively retiring officers. This comes at the backdrop of Gen Sejusa, 61 being denied retirement for unknown reasons while at the same time retiring the likes of Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde.
“Gen. Sejusa started asking for permission to leave the army in 1996. A number of generals have been let go since then but not him.”
UPDF officers led by Lt Gen Charles Angina on Sunday arrested Sejusa, a former intelligence chief and outspoken critic of President Yoweri Museveni as tensions mount ahead of a presidential poll next month.
Gen David Sejusa’s arrest “followed a two-and-half-hour search and siege by UPDF (Ugandan army) officers of the general’s home. Gen. Sejusa also known as Tinyefunza, is being detained at Makindye military barracks in the Ugandan capital Kampala,
