Gold scam: Mbale district boss conned Shs600m as CMI probes Kulayigye

In a new round of gold deals gone bad, Mbale district chairman, Bernard Mujasi, becomes the latest victim after being conned of Shs600m.

People claiming to be gold dealers recently approached Mujasi and coerced him into signing transfer forms for his posh hotel known as Eldima valued at Shs600m.

In a hasty transaction, Mujasi signed the papers giving away his hotel only to realise later he had been given fake gold.

He rushed to police and reported the matter; the officers have since commenced investigations.

CMI probes Kulayigye

Meanwhile, the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence [CMI] has commenced investigations into a fake gold deal involving UPDF Chief Political Commissar Felix Kulayigye.

Daily Monitor reports that Shaban Jagwe, the man at the centre of the deal, claims top army bosses tortured him and took his land title worth Shs700m under duress.

Jagwe’s lawyers have written to the UPDF Chief of Defence Forces Katumba Wamala protesting his detention, torture and accused an army lieutenant of putting him at gunpoint before intimidating him into surrendering his land title as security to clear a $62,000 debt to Ms Brenda Murungi.

The lawyers also claim that Jagwe was dragged to the UPDF lieutenant and Murungi who were in company of other soldiers.

“It was at this point that [the UPDF lieutenant] told our client he was being held for and on behalf of Col Kulayigye and Ms Murungi who claimed to demand from him $40,000 plus operations fees of $22,000 totaling to $62,000 which arose out of a gold deal which our client didn’t know,” the letter, copied to CMI reads in part.

“While in illegal detention death threats were made by his captors and told him to pay or else he would be executed,” the lawyers allege.

More gold scams

In 2010, Leticia Ssebowa, a kindergarten caretaker in Fredericia, Denmark and her husband Carstine Jespersten, were conned over Shs1.68b in a gold deal by a Ugandan witch doctor.

The witch doctor, Ddumba Muwawu, approached Leaty’s Godson Harrison Egesa in July, 2010 claiming connections with Congo gold dealers.

In a series of sham transactions, Muwawu milked Shs1.6bn from the couple.
