The 10 UPDF soldiers killed by Somalia Al Shabaab insurgents were airlifted to Uganda today.
Addressing plenary today, Gen Aronda Nyakairima, the minister of Internal Affairs, said their next of kin have already been informed.
He said 46 Al Shabaab insurgents were killed and 2 captured during the attack on Janaale, Uganda AMISOM base located in Southern Somalia on Tuesday. 10 of those who lost their lives have been flown to Entebbe army air base. Two will be flown in tomorrow, according to army spokesperson, Lt Col Paddy Ankunda.
Ankunda said the army appreciates and salutes the service, dedication and sacrifice of the gallant troops.
“Actually, there have been other fatal and more serious attacks than this, the difference is that this is the first such attack on UPDF,” he said.
He dismissed reports of any suspense saying the families of those who died have been fully briefed.
He also dismissed the reports by Western military officials saying their report on fatalities in Somalia was wrong.
“UPDF has done the head count, let the speculation stop.”
Also today, Parliament observed a moment of silence for the slain soldiers praying that they rest in peace.
