Gashumba arrested for saying Besigye won elections

Political activist, businessman and social commentator, Frank Gashumba, has been arrested and taken to the Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Directorate [CIID] in Kibuli.

Gashumba was arrested following his recent social media comments on Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) decision to ban his appearance on NTV Uganda.

He is also being questioned for claiming in his video that opposition leader Kizza Besigye defeated President Yoweri Museveni in the 2016 elections.

“As expected the State has ordered for my Arrest. Now being held @ CID. Crime: Saying that Dr. Kizza Besigye won the 2016 Gen elections,” he tweeted just after his arrest Thursday afternoon.

Gashumba says Mutabazi is behind his arrest, something the UCC boss dismissed as untrue.

In a directive dated October 10, 2016, signed by UCC spokesperson Fred Otunnu, the regulator ordered NTV to stop airing programmes that give the Gashumba a platform to mudsling government and its officials.

In response, the Sisimuka Uganda founder attacked UCC executive director, Eng Godfrey Mutabazi, for allegedly wasting tax payers’ money on his personal “selfish ends” citing the August incident where Mutabazi blew Shs3bn of tax payers’ money on foreign trips.

“You Mutabazi, you put off social media to steal Kizza Besigye’s votes,” Gashumba continued, claiming that in the February 2016 elections, UCC switched off all social media platforms; Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp and YouTube, to rig elections in favour of Museveni.

Gashumba then took it upon himself to remind the government of President Museveni that it is indeed time to go.

“Whatever you do, it’s time to go. You have sucked this country dry and now you must go,” Gashumba said.

He added: “This is our country, we will rescue it. Don’t provoke us anymore. You have killed all state institutions. You have destroyed everything. You are creating an impoverished population so you can control them forever!”

Citing the former South African president, Nelson Mandela, who was imprisoned for nearly three decades and a blackman, Barack Obama, who became a president of United States of America, Gashumba concluded that anything was possible.

“Anything is possible. We [Uganda] will survive you [Museveni regime] too. You have killed the economy flat out. People are poor beyond repair Supermarkets including Nakumatt are also in a bad shape. Children have no school fees. Banks are collapsing and you say the economy is okay?”

He went on: “People only eat meat on funerals. People don’t have money. You have stolen from the country.”

Gashumba even called for a general clemency for former presidents Idi Amin and Dr Milton Obote saying their regimes were not as bad as Museveni’s regime.
