Gulu town has for the second time in two days been rocked by heavy gunfire.
Gunshots were heard Monday afternoon as police made an arrest near Gulu main Bus park.
Three police officers shot in the air to disperse crowds who had intentions of freeing the suspect.
Wilson Kwanya, the Aswa Regional Police Commander says the suspect arrested is one of the accomplices in the police station attack last evening.
People reportedly scampered for their lives as police fired shots to disperse them.
The renewed gunfire comes just hours after police confirmed that one Uganda People Defense Force (UPDF) soldier was killed and four others injured on Sunday evening following a fierce shootout with gunmen who attempted to raid Gulu Central Police Station.
Heavy sporadic gunfire erupted in the heart of Gulu Municipality at about 9:00pm lasting over 30 minutes bringing business in the bustling municipality to standstill as locals scampered for safety.
Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayuhura confirmed the development in a press briefing held in Kampala.
“One UPDF soldier was killed, 4 others injured and a few civilians. We thus mourn the death of our comrade,” Gen Kayihura, the Inspector General of Police told journalists on Monday.
He said the criminals left behind six AK 47s, 12 rounds of ammunition, a bow and 8 arrows among other weapons.
