Former chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) Aziz Kalungi Kasujja has died.
EC spokesperson Mr Jotham Taremwa confirms this.
Mr Taremwa adds, “It [the death] is very unfortunate.”
He says he needs more time to get details.
In 1997, President Museveni appointed Mr Kasujja chairperson of the EC.
Mr Kasujja was the EC chairperson during the 2001 general election, which, for the first time, pitted Dr Kizza Besigye against President Museveni.
Though, according to the EC Museveni beat Dr Besigye, the Supreme Court justice ruled that EC had not conducted a free and fair contest. But the court added that the irregularities that occurred during the election had not “substantial enough” to tilt the votes against Dr Besigye.
He left the EC in 2002.
The president later appointed him Uganda’s ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia where he served until 2011.
He returned home thereafter and was one time hospitalised at the Mulago Heart Institute due to a heart complication.
