High Court in Kampala has nullified the election of Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] legislator Apollo Kantinti who has been representing Kyadondo East constituency.
Kantinti becomes the fifth MP to lose his seat only this week and the thirteenth 10th Parliament MP to be thrown out so far.
Kantinti’s election has been nullified over non-compliance with electoral laws by the Electoral Commission (EC).
The ruling party candidate and rival, Sitenda Sebalu, dragged him to court.
High Court judge justice Alex Kaweesa ordered fresh elections in the constituency.
In a phone interview with Insider after the ruling, the legislator who serves as the Information and Communications official on opposition’s Shadow Cabinet, said the judgement was based on hearsay.
“I’m not contented with the judgement. The judge had all the facts before him indicating that I won the elections,” the MP told us.
“All scenarios show that am the winner,” he added.
According to Kantinti, the irregularities cited by his rival in court were a fault of the electoral commission by not him as a candidate.
“If the electoral commission fails to do its duty, why should you blame me the candidate? The EC failed to tally results of seven polling stations. The people voted and we have Declaration Forms.”
Kantinti accused the judge of being biased and “wrong in his judgement”.
“I will definitely appeal. By Monday, they will appeal by appeal before them,” the legislator who has only 14 days from today to file his appeal, said.
