The Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has called on the public for a fundraising drive for the Shs28 billion for Makerere lecturers if government will not have opened the university by Thursday this week.
Former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye last week have government 10 days ultimatum to open the university, failure of which he said they would mobilise the country to demonstrate or do something that would lead to the opening of the university.
Ms Margaret Wokuri Madanda, the shadow State Minister for Education said if Makerere has not opened by Thursday evening, “I take this opportunity to invite the public for a fundraising drive that will be led by HE The People’s President at Makerere University on Friday 2nd December 2016 at the Freedom Square starting 10am.”
She further said the opposition appeals to the Alumni, the Parents, Organisations, People in the Diaspora and the General Public to come and we re-open Makerere as “we raise funds for the lecturers.
Our children must resume studies. We are aware that 28bn is a lot of money but like the saying goes; ‘where there is a will there is a way’. We have made a calculation that if we get 500,000 people each donating Shs60,000, we would even have more than what is required at the moment.
This is not to say people with less amounts should not contribute to this cause.”
According to her, a fundraising account NO. 30100141114. Acc. Name: Dr. Besigye; Centenary Bank.
“All other queries about contributions should be addressed to the Ministers of Finance in The People’s Government, the Hon Nathan Nandala- Mafabi,” she added.
