Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party on Monday said it was ready and willing to work with former independent presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi to save its leader Dr Kizza Besigye from the dungeon.
Mbabazi who served as National Resistance Movement (NRM) party Secretary General and Prime Minister in president Museveni’s government said at the weekend that he would be on Dr Besigye’s side in his legal battle with government.
Both candidates disputed the poll won by incumbent President Museveni claiming it was rigged.
Mr Mbabazi who was in the third position unsuccessfully challenged Mr Museveni’s victory in the Supreme Court.
“I shouldn’t be going back into active law practice but because of the need for peace (in this country) I will be his (Besigye) lawyer,” Mbabazi told the congregation at a thanksgiving function for victory of Mr Kenneth Tumuhamye, Kanyantorogo Sub county chairperson elect, at Kishenyi Church of Uganda in Kanungu district on Sunday.
Dr Besigye was on May 13, charged with treason before Moroto Chief Magistrate’s Court and remanded.
FDC spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda yesterday told the media that Mbabazi was welcome to offer a helping hand in their legal battle to free Dr Besigye, a four time unsuccessful challenger of Mr Museveni.
Ssemujju said Mbabazi would be joining a team of other lawyers volunteering to represent Dr Besigye.
When Dr Besigye was previously charged with treason, Mr Mbabazi was Defence minister.
