Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, senior opposition Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] officials, Members of Parliament and journalists have been blocked from receiving Kizza Besigye.
Security was heightened in Uganda on Monday morning ahead of Besigye’s return from abroad.
Police and military police secured the FDC head offices in Najjanankumbi along Entebbe road, areas around Clock Tower in the city and Entebbe international airport itself.
Journalists were blocked from accessing Entebbe Airport with only passengers being allowed.
Police which claims not to have received notice from FDC could not allow journalists to cover Besigye’s arrival.
Military officers were seen sending journalists further away from the airport asking them to return to Kampala.
The Lord Mayor and MPs arrived at the VIP lounge as early as 6;30am but were denied entry.
“Who is entitled to access the VIP Lounge if opposition MPs have been denied entry! Are all state facilities now for regime,” activist Bireete Sarah wondered.
When he arrived at last, Besigye was arrested by military police and whisked away to an unknown destination.
“We do not know of his whereabouts,” FDC party officials said.
Among the officials were Lukwago, Ssemujju Nganda, Ingrid Turinawe, Francis Mwijukye and Makerere councillor Doreen Nyanjura.
