Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) offices in Gulu district have been put under police siege following a planned demonstration by party leaders and supporters dubbed ‘free my vote’ ahead of President Yoweri Museveni’s swearing in.
The offices have been closed and remain guarded by the armed Field Force Police.
FDC publicity Secretary Kelly Ķomakech has gone into hiding after he escaped arrest by police.
Police has been deployed heavily into the district and other parts of the country to foil the planned demonstration.
Early this week, police warned it would crash any defiance demonstration by FĎC ahead of Mr Museveni swearing in as president.
And on Wednesday, 26 people, including Kampala city Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, FDC pastor Happy Ngabo and suspended Makerere University research fellow Stella Nyanzi were charged before the Makindye magistrates Court for disobeying lawful order.
They were arrested on Monday at the FDC head offices in Najjanankumbi when they turned up for the weekly party prayers that have been going on for more than two months.
