A Tanzanian man has been sentenced to three years in jail or pay a fine of TSh7 million (Shs10 million) after he was found guilty of insulting President John Magufuli on his Facebook page.
Daily Nation reports that Arusha Principal Resident Magistrate Augustino Rwezile says the accused, Issac Abakuki, was to pay Tsh7 million and serve three years at the same time after admitting the offence.
Abakuki’s punishment was later reduced to a penalty of Tsh7 million without jail sentence.
The money will be paid in two instalments.
Abakuki is expected to pay the first instalment of TSh3 million by July 8 and remaining balance by August 8 this year or else face jail sentence.
Abakuki first appeared in the court last April for publishing abusive language against the president on his Facebook page.
