Security minister for Security Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde has announced an end to the era of Kifeesi criminals in Kampala.
Tumukunde was speaking shortly after being handed the office by Hon Mary Karooro Okurut on Wednesday morning in Kampala.
Kifeesi group operates during the rush hours as people leave the city grabbing their phones and handbags through open car windows.
They are concentrated in areas like Clock Tower, Namirembe Road, Nsambya traffic lights, along Entebbe Road and Queen’s Way where traffic is usually stiff.
Tumukunde asked Kifeesi criminals to try their operations elsewhere but in Uganda and definitely not when he is the minister for security.
He threatened to deal with all criminal gangs that have been terrorising city dwellers.
“These are just small time gangs that can easily be combated and defeated,” Tumukunde told press.
He added: “We have been able to fight terrorists and keep the country safe. How about these petty criminals? We shall fight them.”
The minister promised to work with journalists as a source of intelligence information to fight crime.
He will also rely on Local Council chairpersons for information gathering and sharing.
