The electoral commission chairman, Eng Badru Kiggundu, has warned FDC presidential candidate, Kizza Besigye, against spreading messages of defiance.
Addressing press in Kampala on Wednesday, Kiggundu warned that should Besigye proceed with calling for defiance, the commission will take action.
“EC has noted with concern the consistent calls by candidate Besigye for defiance as a campaign strategy.”
“He [Besigye] should not blame me for the consequences,” Kiggundu said.
The EC also condemned actions by Besigye’s agents and supporters urging them to desist from taking a path of defiance but conduct campaigns lawfully.
Besigye says the only way to win 2016 elections is defiance and not compliance.
He recently congratulated Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, who stuck to defiance and forced the commission to nominate him for the 2016 mayoral elections.
This is the message Besigye is spreading at his rallies countrywide.
“I urge all Ugandans to abide by the law that guides the electoral process,” Kiggundu appealed.
He said cases of defacing posters will be handled as reported.
EC warned candidates, agents and supporters against malicious acts of defacement and removal of candidates’ posters as has been witnessed at most Amama Mbabazi’s rallies.
Kiggundu said media reports saying that EC of today is different from one of 2006 are false.
“We have always announced winning candidates.”
Nomination of MP candidates will be conducted on December 2-3, 2015.
Kiggundu said candidates for parliamentary seats are required to submit names of 10 registered voters from their constituencies; Shs 300,000 fees, photographs and education particulars for nomination.
