Dr. Patrick Wakida, the head of Research World International (RWI), an organisation that released an opinion poll recently putting President Museveni at 51 percent, is now suing government spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo.
Appearing on Capital Gang on Saturday, Wakida denied soliciting Shs 50m from government to “cook up” an opinion poll in favour of the president.
Last Saturday, Opondo accused Wakida of demanding money to do the opinion poll which later gave President Museveni 51 percent, Kizza Besigye 32 percent and Amama Mbabazi 12 percent.
Dr. Wakida said it was common practice that they [researchers] engage with stake holders before they release the poll.
“We talked about the cost of doing a poll. Shs50-Shs80m depending on the questions you ask. The cost of extra analysis depends on what questions you choose. Ofwono Opondo made a very wide allegation. It represents a certain level of deception.”
Dr.Wakida said if he wanted money, he would go to the Secretary General of NRM, Kasule Lumumba, not Opondo who also doubles as the deputy NRM spokesperson.
Wakida said through his lawyer, Gawaya Tegulle, he had already served Opondo with a notice of intention to sue unless he openly apologises within 3 days.
Opondo had said he met Wakida at Kabira Country Club in July last year and that he had recordings of their conversation.
Wakida demanded that the Media Centre boss produces the recording of the meetings.
Wakida’s lawyer speaking at the same political talk show, said “live and let die” is how the NRM plays its politics.
“Opondo was trying to discredit our reputations and that of RWI. I never called anyone for money on my behalf or for RWI.”
Tegulle said Dr.Wakida doesn’t hold a position of power in the Forum for Democratic Change [FDC].
“Nothing bars him from taking part. RWI is a company, separate from Dr.Wakida the individual. At the panel, I was replacing Ssemujju Nganda [FDC spokesperson] who was unable to attend. They needed someone to speak for the party.”
Tegulle confirmed that he has already served Opondo with a notice of intention to sue.
Dr.Wakida, presently, said NRM discredits the polls and yet they continue to use them.
“I would like to think that Opondo was saying these things for political reasons.”
