Imam Makumbi, the Vice President of the Democratic Party for western region survived an attack by members of the Bodaboda community in Mbarara district accusing him of failure to pay for their services.
Makumbi reportedly hired the cyclists to lead a road procession on Thursday as he returned home after the delegate’s conference in which he was re-elected DP Vice President.
They met him along the Mbarara-Masaka highway at about 6:30p.m and led him through Mbarara town up to four miles on Mbarara Isingiro road towards his home.
But what was expected to be a jubilant trail evolved into clashes when the cyclists held Makumbi hostage and blocked the road for over an hour demanding for the payment of 250,000 Shillings as facilitation for the task.
He pleaded with them saying he would pay after reaching his home, an offer the errant riders rejected.
It took the intervention of other boda boda cyclists from Makumbi’s home village who stormed the scene with sticks and thrashed their rivals to rescue Makumbi.
Makumbi accused NRM moles of staging the ugly incident.
