DP cancels polls after MP Nabukenya seizes registers

The Democratic Party Independent National Elections Committee has cancelled grassroots elections in Luweero and Butuntumula sub counties citing electoral malpractices.

The committee members led by their chair Zachary Olum on Wednesday rushed to Luweero and held three separate meetings to investigate and reconcile warring factions in the district.

The meetings followed two petitions challenging the DP grassroots poll results from Katikamu North and Katikamu South Constituencies filed by the DP party organizing Secretary Adam Lubega and publicity secretary Muhamadi Kaweesa.

During one of the meetings at St Paul Guest House in Luweero town council, Thomas Kironde, the Butuntumula Sub county DP chairperson told the committee that Luweero woman MP, Brenda Nabukenya, usurped powers of the registrars and conducted polls in his sub county, which is irregular.

Kironde also accused Nabukenya of illegally confiscating party registers from him and handpicking delegates from some parishes.

Joachim Kisekka, the Luweero Sub county DP chairperson says that some voters appeared twice on the registers, a thing he blames on the MP.

He claims that the MP did this to favour Erasto Kibirango, the Luweero District DP Chairperson who is eyeing the LC V chairperson’s seat.

Others Members also accused Nabukenya and Kibirango of allowing non-party members to participate in the polls.

However, Nabukenya dismissed the allegations leveled against her as baseless in a phone interview with URN.

She said some people are complaining because they lost the poll adding that they need counseling to accept defeat.

Polly Mukiibi, the deputy chairperson the Democratic Party Independent National Elections Committee says they have resolved to conduct fresh elections in the affected sub counties.

According to Mukiibi, the committee found some irregularities resulting from the fierce competition between Luweero DP Chairperson Erasto Kibirango and Luweero town LC 3 chairperson Charles Ssebyala.

The two are eyeing the Democratic Party ticket for the district LC 5 chairman’s seat.

However, efforts to reconcile the two officials and their supporters failed to yield results.

Now, Zachary Olum, the Chairperson of the Democratic Party Independent National Elections Committee says they will meet in Kampala to chat away forward to resolve the conflict.

He says the committee will also decide on whether to conduct fresh elections in Bombo, Katikamu and other sub counties because of complaints that have emerged there.

Charles Ssebyala, the Luweero Sub county LC 3 chairman and his rival Erasto Kibirango have promised to reconcile once free and fair elections are held.

The party is also yet to conduct elections in Katikamu North constituency and District level over disagreements on the party registers and malpractice.
