Death, detentions rock chaotic NRM elections


NRM members fight during party primaries at Wankulukuku

The ruling party which critics accuse of influencing the Electoral Commission, has so far registered numerous arrests, detentions and even murders in its chaotic, bribery and voting-rigging marred elections.

Election in the NRM primaries in Te-Fwene polling station in Guu A Village, Pandwong Division in Kitgum Municipality was called off after disagreements broke out at the station with 168 registered voters.

Chaos erupted following the absence of a voters register.

The registrar and party administrator had to escape by motor cycles after party members turned rowdy.

In Moroto, an aspirant for the LC 5 councilor for Nadunget sub-county in Moroto district, Raphael Eritoi, and two other people were shot dead on Friday.
Raphael Eritoi was attacked along Moroto-Kitale road and shot twice in the chest while on his way home.

The incident took place at Kambizzi village, Loputuk parish in Nadunget sub-county, five kilometres East of Moroto town.

The body was placed at the Moroto Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem.

In Kabale, Henry Musasizi, the incumbent Rubanda County East Member of Parliament has opened a case of forgery against his NRM party rival Bernard Zimbihire.

Musasizi accuses Zimbihire of circulating a letter that he purportedly authored on October 20th 2013 asking the former Kakore Parish Priest Reverend Father Alfred Byarugaba to help him solicit votes from the Catholic Church, where he belongs.

Musasizi wants Police to investigate his opponent for alleged forgery and tarnishing his name.

In Hoima, the election of NRM party candidates for Division chairpersons, LC 3, LC IV and LC V councilors have delayed due to a stuffed ballot box.

It all started when Godfrey Mugenyi, the NRM registrar for Bujumbura division was arrested with a stuffed ballot box at about 6am this morning.

The elections of Members of Parliament haven’t even started yet the violence characterizing the ruling party’s primaries is already at its peak.
