Cout blocks the closure of Makerere Fort portal branch

The Fort Portal High Court judge Justice David Batema has issued an injunction halting all activities associated with closing and relocating Makerere University’s Fort Portal branch.

Aggrieved students led by Moses Mugisa, a second year business student dragged the institution to court for breach of contract.

On Monday this week, Makerere University officially closed this campus that was set up in 2010; on grounds that the community in Fort Portal had not embraced the institution given the low enrollment of students of about 200.

The petitioners asked court to order Makerere to maintain the campus until the ongoing students finish their respective courses. They say the decision to move the campus was intentional, following talk that the branch would be taken to Bushenyi district.

Yesterday however, while appearing before the High Court Justice David Batema, Prof Baker Nyakana the director Makerere University Jinja campus told court that 52 out of the 65 continuing students have accepted to relocate to Jinja campus.
