A defamation case filed by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, against a local tabloid, The Red Pepper, has been concluded in her favour.
Justice Yasin Nyanzi in his ruling delivered on Friday, 2nd September 2016 at the High Court Civil Division in Kampala, awarded Kadaga Shs.120 million being general and exemplary costs to compensate the damage caused to her reputation.
The case was filed after the tabloid in its 9th September 2012 issue published a list of over 300 indebted tycoons whose homes, commercial buildings and motor vehicles were to be attached for failure to pay back bank loans.
The list included the Speaker of Parliament.
The newspaper alleged that an investment she owned was to be auctioned to recover unpaid loans.
In his ruling, Justice Yasin Nyanzi confirmed that the damages awarded by Court were to punish the defendants and discourage them from publishing any further derogatory matters about the Speaker.
The Judge also placed a permanent injunction restraining The Pepper Publications Ltd and its agents from publishing any further derogatory materials about the Speaker.
