In what some supporters term as a coup with in a coup, Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] top organ has approved a decision to name a new Leader of Opposition in Parliament.
According to an earlier stand by many, the party had decided not to name their leader in parliament “Leader of Opposition”, since they believe Kizza Besigye won the 2016 elections.
While FDC National Executive Committee [NEC] was sitting at the party head offices in Najjanankumbi on Tuesday, a group of activists stormed the meeting with strict demands.
They demanded that the idea of LoP be swapped for a Prime Minister or Cabinet only to be arrested by police and locked away.
A section of FDC members now accuse members of NEC for betraying them after allegedly being bought off with “blood money” to appoint a LoP and accept losing elections.
Those opposed to LoP, described the decision by NEC to accept the status of opposition, as “a coup within a coup”.
“Imprisoning Besigye was a coup against the will of the people and the FDC NEC has carried out a coup against the will of the majority,” a bitter member pointed out.
FDC has 37 MPs in parliament and is the right party to appoint a LoP, a position being sought after by party spokesperson, Ssemujju Nganda, Kasese Woman MP Winifred Kizza, Dokolo Woman Cecilia Ogwal and 8th Parliament LoP also Agago North MP Ogenga Latigo.
Out-going LoP Wafula Oguttu, Budadiri West MP Nandala Mafabi, FDC secretary for mobilisation Ingrid Turinawe, deputy Secretary General, Harold Kaija, are against the idea of naming a LoP.
According to them, what is important now is rescuing Besigye from prison before any other action.
“That is our goal now, to rescue Besigye from prison. That is our priority for now,” Kaija said.
Doreen Nyanjura, the LC5 Woman Councillor Makerere and Secretary for Trade who is also a member of NEC says she is opposed to the idea of LoP.
“Some of us were opposed to the shadow cabinet, majority were in for a shadow cabinet.”
FDC sources tell us the likes of Reagan Okumu, Ogenga Latigo, Ssemujju, Cecilia Ogwal, Elijah Okupa Winnie Kiiza, Simon Oyet, Nabilah Naggayi, among others are pushing the agenda for a new LoP.
This group is accused of allegedly pocketing Shs 3bn to sell off the revolution and betray Besigye.
It is also alleged that the decision was taken more than 2 weeks ago to accept the position of LoP but there were sharp division within the party ranks.
Agago Woman MP Franca Akello fell short of calling FDC activists “NRM people”.
One of the contenders for the position Hon Abdu Katuntu tactfully stayed away.
FDC president, Mugisha Muntu, who is expected to name the new LoP will depend on the consensus arrived at by the top party organs.
At the moment, the organs have failed to agree on the matter.
