Police in Kaberamaido have arrested the Officer in Charge of Ochero police post, Corporal Zadock Baite, for allegedly raping a female suspect in custody.
East Kyoga police spokesperson, Juma Hassan Nyene, told URN that Baite is being held at Soroti Police Station after he was arrested on Thursday.
Police says the officer picked out a female suspect at night from custody and took her to his residence where he had carnal knowledge with her without her consent, which is against the police conduct.
The suspect had been arrested for aiding defilement.
Nyene says following her ordeal with the officer in charge, she reported him to higher authorities.
Nyene said the victim had earlier been arrested and detained at Ochero Police Post for allegedly masterminding defilement of a young girl.
“The law is very clear, if any female suspect is arrested, you cannot take her to your house and have sex with her,” Nyene said.
He said Cpl Baite could be charged with defilement and rape if information that the woman is aged below 18 is confirmed.
“If the girl or woman is underage, that is defilement and if she is aged 18 or above it is rape,” Nyene added.
Meanwhile, two police officers of the Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Directorate (CIID) at Kaberamaido Central Police Station have been arrested on charges of soliciting a bribe from suspects who had been detained.
Nyene identified the officers as CIID officer Stephen Oselle and his deputy, Detective Assistant Inspector of Police, Richard Obace.
According to Nyene, the two officers demanded a bribe of Shs 50,000 from suspects Robert Okello and Michael Eucu, who had been detained over land cases but later released on police bond.
Upon being granted the police bond, the two detective officers demanded a bribe of Shs 50,000.
Nyene said the officers were trailed by officials from Teso Anti-Corruption Coalition (TAC) who followed the case and worked jointly with the Police Standards Unit officers in East Kyoga region.
