The Democratic of Congo-DRC is ready to exhume an unmarked mass grave at Maluku, about 100 kilometers from the Capital Kinshasa, the Justice Minister Alexis Thambwe has revealed.
At least 421 bodies are believed to be buried in the mass grave.
The revelation by the minister comes amidst mounting pressure from the International Community on the DRC government to open thorough investigations into the matter.
Early this month, opposition politicians claimed that the people buried in the mass grave were gunned down during the Anti-government protests in January 2015.
Hundreds of DRC citizens took to the streets in January to protest the proposed postponement of elections saying it was a ploy to extend President Joseph Kabila’s rule.
Government forces responded with brutal force leading to the shooting of several protesters.
However, the DRC government insists that, the bodies are of still born babies and unclaimed ones. Alexis Thambwe, the Justice Minister also denies that all the bodies were buried in the same grave.
The Discovery of the grave comes at a time when the government is facing sharp criticism for using terror as a tool to silence the Opposition and ex-combatants in Maluku area.
