FDC delegates conference ongoing at Namboole stadium came to a temporary halt after it was discovered that some fake delegates were smuggled into the venue.
Dramatic scenes then followed as Abdu Katuntu, Mugisha Muntu’s manager, protested that several people have infiltrated the conference to vote as delegates for Dr Kizza Besigye’s camp.
After a tense standoff between Muntu and Besigye’s chief campaign manager Geoffrey Ekanya, the FDC Electoral Commission head Dan Mugarura rules that conference is temporarily halted so the delegates can be verified.
Muntu camp further said the hall was full of hooligans and needed to be cleared.
Besigye too reportedly refused to campaign because his 26 supporters were allegedly denied accreditation.
Everyone was ordered to leave the hall so delegates can be verified afresh.
Speaking on the impasse, Besigye says Muntu team’s complaints were raised at the stage of campaigns yet voting procedures start after the campaigns.
“The FDC flag bearer campaign at NDC has been delayed following complaints by Muntu team that some unverified delegates didn’t have seats!”
He added: “Muntu team demanded that everyone vacates the hall and delegates enter first! We’ve accepted this to end the impasse. It’ll take some hours!” Besigye pointed out in a tweet.
UPDATE: We are told two people have been arrested with fake identification cards.
The apprehended fake delegates have been whisked away by police while Besigye drove off for sometime during the commotion.
