UPDF chief political commissar on Thursday rejected a proposition to join the race for the job of deputy speaker of Parliament.
The race is currently between incumbent deputy speaker Jacob Oulanyah and Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko.
In a session presided over by the newly sworn in Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, NRM MP Peter Mugema nominated Nsereko while Hon Bright Rwamirama nominated Oulanyah.
Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze proposed the name of Col. Kulayigye to be added to the list of contestants.
Nambooze based her proposition on “the good work done by the UPDF in agriculture”.
“I Betty Nambooze move a motion to nominate Hon. Col Kulayigye for Deputy Speaker,” she announced.
The soldier, however, rejected the nomination in favour of Oulanyah.
“I decline my nomination in favour of Hon. Jacob Oulanyah,” Col. Kulayigye told the house.
Kulayigye, a former army spokesperson was recently elected to represent the army in parliament.
