Renowned Kampala City car dealer Muhammad Ssebuwufu who is accused of murdering city businesswoman Betty Katusabe last year has been released from Luzira maximum security prison on bail.
The High Court in Kampala today released Ssebuwufu who had spent 11 months on remand at a cash bail of Shs10m while his three sureties, presidential senior advisor on media issues Tamale Mirundi, Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata Batte and Hajji Abdu Karim Kironde were each bonded Shs100m not cash.
The release of Ssebuwufu comes just day after his co-accused ASP Aaron Baguma, the former Kampala Central Police Station commander was released also on bail by the same judge.
The presiding judge Justice Wilson Masalu Musene said Baguma’s case had set precedence fo Ssebuwufu’s case and therefore it would be unfair in the eyes of the public to continue keeping him in prison while his co-accused is out of prison.
Earlier, one of the defence lawyers had told court that Sebuwufu who had applied for bail will undertake to abide by all conditions that will be provided by the court.
“It is my prayer that since court considered granting bail to Baguma who was just arrested and committed recently, it does consider this applicant’s request too,” said his lawyer Peter Nsibambi.
