A vicious chimpanzee attacked a toddler this morning and maimed his private organs and left toes.

The one –and-half-year old toddler has been rushed to Kakumiro Health Center IV, in Kibaale District in a critical condition.

Eye witnesses narrated that the chimpanzee first scared away the older children who were with the toddler and then snatched the baby from its cot placed in the garden, where his parents had gone to work this morning.

By the time he was rescued, the chimpanzee had maimed the baby’s private parts and left toes.

The baby is a son to Olivius Niwamanya, a resident of Bugonda village, Kasambya Sub County, Kibaale district.

The children made an alarm which alerted workers in the garden, who immediately ran after the primate until it dropped the child after nearly two hours of chasing.

Robert Aganyira, the in charge at Kakumiro Health Center IV says the magnitude of the injuries inflicted on the child is serious but can be medically managed.

He says the minor’s private organ was totally bitten off.

Moreen Kanshabe, an eye witness says the same animal attacked a nearby family on Sunday morning and attempted to kill a child.

The child’s parents were cultivating a few meters from Nyabiku forest reserve which harbours chimpanzees, baboons, monkeys and other wild animals.
