The ruling NRM’s Central Executive Committee has approved President Yoweri Museveni, also its National Chairman as their presidential flag bearer in 2016 general elections.
The motion to have Museveni as the NRM sole candidate was tabled by State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Evelyn Anite, at Kyankwanzi in 2014.
Together with David Bahati, then Deputy Government Chief Whip, Anite led a parliamentary Caucus at Kyankwanzi in 2014 to endorse Museveni as their sole candidate in 2016 elections.
The youthful MP went on her knees and begged the president to accept her suggestion.
The resolution was signed by over 200 members of Parliament all endorsing a proposal to stretch Museveni’s reign beyond 2016.
The motion did not amuse then then Secretary General, Amama Mbabazi.
He signed the motion among the last people on the list.
Following the development, Amama was accused of harbouring presidential ambitions and consequently sacked both as Prime Minister and NRM SG.
When Mbabazi told press at his Kololo home that he would not seek the presidency on NRM ticket but as an independent, Anite said it was good because “he [Mbabazi] is not going against our party decision which he had agreed to”.
The CEC meeting held on Friday approved Museveni both as NRM party chairman and presidential flag bearer in 2016 elections.
CEC recommended his name to the top most organ, National Executive Committee [NEC] which is sitting at State House Entebbe today.
