Burundians want term limits abolished

Burundi could scrap presidential term limits from its constitution after a report by a presidential commission said that most Burundians want the limits abolished.

The commission set up to hear public views on governance reported that most citizens wanted the presidency to have no curbs on the number of times the head of state can seek re-election.

The East African nation descended into violence in April 2015 following President Pierre Nkurunziza’s declaration that he would seek a controversial third term in office, one which he went on to win in the July poll.

Reuters news agency reports Justin Nzoyisaba, chairman of CNDI, a commission set up by Nkurunziza last year to canvas public opinion on the country’s political system, to say that most Burundians wanted term limits abolished.
