Burundi: RTNB journalist entire family murdered

Reports from Burundi says at least one policeman, six gunmen and a journalist’s family have been killed in Ngagara neighbourhood in the capital Bujumbura.

Witnesses say RTNB cameraman, Nkezabahizi, his wife and their two teenage kids (16 and 14) were just murdered on Tuesday night.

This came after Burundi Ministry of Public Security, had issued a press statement saying the country was safe.

So far, Burundi has recorded 130 murders, 48 attempts and 28 arsons since President Pierre Nkurunziza gave himself a third term mandate.

SOS Media Burundi reports four grenade explosions that left two dead and another wounded in a field of a local primary school in Ngagara area.

The deceased were bound together by handcuffs.

Military and police officers rushed to the scene only to be greeted with gunfire and sporadic shooting.

Several shots and explosions were also heard in different locations; Ngagara, Jabe, Nyakabiga, Mutanga, Kiriri and localities around Bujumbura Rural.

Nkezabahizi’s daughters were murdered too

The intensity of the gunfire and explosions and the number of affected sectors are reminiscent of an unprecedented escalation in the Burundian capital.

Gunmen also attacked a police position forcing cops to deploy to Ngagara, Ward 3 and surround it.

Memory of assassination

The violence came on the same day Burundi was celebrating the 54th annual commemoration of the assassination of the hero of the country’s independence Prince Louis Rwagasore.

In his speech at the victory of the UPRONA that brought Burundi to independence, the son of King Mwambutsa advocated for unity, peace and good governance.

He promised that his government would fight corruption and solve financial problems.

Prince Rwagasore also preached tolerance and respect in the plurality of ideas.

54 years on, the challenges he has not had time to make (the prince was murdered shortly after this famous speech), persist in Burundi, the country through one of the most serious crises in its history.

The real tribute to him to be that today’s leaders of tomorrow as well as all the Burundian people walking in ideology of tolerance and patriotism unconditionally.
