Before the Monday assassination of a top opposition figure, Burundi gunmen first targeted a state prosecutor.
According to SOS Media Burundi, Isaac Nsabuwanka, a prosecutor in Ruyigi province in eastern Burundi was nearly murdered on Friday night in an ambush by “armed men” 20 metres close to his Sanzu Ruyigi residence.
The National Radio and Television of Burundi (RTNB) reported on Saturday that the incident occurred around 20:00pm local time involving men wearing military uniforms.
Nsabuwanka was returning from a bar in Ruyigi, near the Tanzania border.
Residents reported hearing grenade explosions and gunfire.
A policeman who served as his bodyguard was injured in the attack.
Nsabuwanka was also shot but is out of danger.
On Sunday, Master Emmanuel Manirakiza, a lawyer was arrested and detained by police at the Special Research Bureau for attending to arrested persons in the districts of Jabe and Nyakabiga on September 3.
Police and prosecutors accused him of obstructing the investigation, reportedly subjected him to physical and verbal abuse before placing him in custody for over 25 hours.
This young lawyer who participates in a project of the NGO “Lawyers Without Borders” in collaboration with the Burundian bar had witnessed several people described as “criminals or insurgents” since the protests began against the third term of President Pierre Nkurunziza.
SOS Media also reported an attack on Buringa town in Gihanga commune (Bubanza province) west of Burundi on Sunday night.
The attack took place on the Bujumbura-Cibitoke road near the Bujumbura International Airport.
According to a person who narrowly escaped the shooting, the gunmen attacked a military position and some passing cars.
Military killed one of the assailants and took his gun.
Gihanga is close to Rukoko Nature Reserve, bordering the DRC.
The town has undergone several gunmen attacked from that country.
On Monday, an worker of Fly Dubai travel company was attacked by bandits armed with pistols demanding for money.
They made away with four laptops, phones and a huge sum of money.
Last weekend, armed men robbed a branch of a bank and killed a policeman.
A year ago, three Italian sisters were murdered in Kamenge in the parish Mario Guido Conforti Kamenge in Bujumbura.
Their killers have never been arrested.
Still on Monday, two young men were arrested by police in Cibitoke area north of the capital Bujumbura.
Ramadan and Innocent Niyongabo were allegedly caught in possession of two grenades in their pockets.
On Monday night, Patrice Gahungu, spokesman of the Union for Peace and Democracy (UPD) was murdered.
On Tuesday, four dead bodies were found this morning in different places of the urban commune of Cibitoke (north of Bujumbura): one in the Nyabagere river, towards 6th Avenue in Cibitoke and two behind the Kamenge Youth Centre.
One of the dead is a former driver CNDD-FDD party and a driver to Transville Musaga.
Meanwhile, two brothers and party members of Agathon Rwasa’s FNL, Sylvestre and Vianney Nahimana, disappeared since August 4 and their whereabouts are still unknown.
