A minister in President Pierre Nkurunziza’s government has reportedly survived being assassinated.
The Minister of Human Rights, Social Affairs and Gender Martin Nivyabandi and his wife were attacked on Sunday while leaving a church in Nyakabiga neighbourhood of the capital Bujumbura.
The couple survived the attack with light injuries.
The city mayor Freddy Mbonimpa told AFP that a grenade was thrown in the car park of the Healing of the Souls church in Nyakabiga.
At least five worshippers were also injured in the attack, one badly, according to SOS Media Burundi.
Witnesses recount hearing explosions outside the church.
Nivyabandi’s wife was injured in the leg.
His car was badly damaged.
It is reported that the attacker had been trailing the couple for days.
The injured were treated by an NGO Doctors Without Borders.
