Another top ranking Burundi army officer has been assassinated.
The official was identified as General Athanase Kararuza who lives in Gihosha.
On Monday morning, gunmen launched coordinated attacks in Gihosha north of the capital Bujumbura targeting the General.
SOS Media Burundi reports that several gunshots were heard at around 7am.
He was attacked by armed men while travelling to work.
Burundian Army Spokesman Colonel Gasparilla Baratuza has confirmed that Kararuza, senior adviser of security at the office of the Burundian first vice-president was shot dead in the attack.
“General Kararuza was killed along with his wife by unidentified gunmen who mounted an ambush at Gihosha as they were going to work,” Baratuza told reporters.
He added: “They attacked with rockets and grenades, his guard tried to replicate but unfortunately the general Kararuza and his wife were killed on the spot.”
The General’s daughter died of injuries in the hospital later.
While still a Brigadier General, Kararuza was appointed commander of the International Mission for Support to the Central African Republic (MISCA).
He led the 2013 peacekeeping force to CAR.
He also served as the Chief of Staff Interarmes the General Staff of the National Defence Force.
