Bundibugyo floods death toll hits 17

The state-run leading daily New Vision reports that the death toll in Bundibugyo is now at 17 victims.

By Tuesday evening, 14 people had been confirmed dead and scores still missing following floods that swallowed villages.

The most affected areas are the sub counties of Bubukwanga, Bukhonzo, Humya, and Bumadu village in Bundibugyo town council.

Bridges were washed away and some 200 homes destroyed in heavy rains that have cut off access to some areas.

A local official Godfrey Mucunguzi told The Independent 50 people were undergoing treatment in hospital.

Authorities in the area called for help from the government to rescue anyone trapped and to evacuate the injured.

In the neighbouring Rwanda, 49 people were killed over the weekend in landslides caused by heavy rains.

About 1,500 homes in the capital Kigali were damaged during rainstorms.
