Two UPDF soldiers are reported to have been killed in a night shootout at Masaka Armoured Brigade Barracks in Masaka district.

The army spokesperson Lt Col Paddy Ankunda has not responded to our calls.

According to the report, Private Joseph Arioni, on Wednesday night shot his colleagues who were guarding the technical store and run off with a gun.

The incident happened at around midnight in Kasijagirwa village, Katwe-Butego division where the barracks is located.

Captain Benon Mutatina, the Masaka Armoured Brigade political commissar, identified the dead as Corporal Bingana and Lance corporal Kabugo.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Masaka hospital mortuary.

It is not yet clear why Arioni gunned down his colleagues.

The army has already opened up for the soldier so he is brought to book.

The Masaka Armoured  Brigade was commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni in February 2015.

It has gun shades, technical stores and housing flats with 64 units for senior and junior officers.

The projects directed by the Commander-in-Chief are worth Shs 11bn and were constructed by the Chinese firm Medallion Engineering Ltd.

The shootout follows the Makindye Military Barracks incident where a soldier killed seven people in cold blood.
