Thousands have yesterday participated in Kabaka Ronald Mutebi’s 60th birthday run in Lubiri mengo.
The race is one of the festivities organized to commemorate the Kabaka Mutebi’s birthday slated for 13th April.
The runners were flagged off by Kabaka Ronald Mutebi.
At his side was his son Prince Kiweewa Crispin Jjunju and Buganda Premier Charles Peter Mayiga.
The participants were led by guest runner Prince David Wasajja together with the event’s organizing committee chairman, Robert Kabushenga who participated in a 5km, 10km and 21kilometer races.
Princess Katrina Ssangalyambogo participated in the 10km race.
This year’s proceeds are to be directed to the prevention and treatment of fistula a disease affecting hundreds of women in the country.
Fistula is a medical condition in which a hole develops between either the rectum or vagina or between the bladder and vagina after severe or failed childbirth.
Buganda Sports Minister Henry Ssekabembe noted that the Kingdom envisages more funding towards the prevention of fistula from the run.
Last year the kingdom gave 50 million shillings towards the drive.
Most of the participants noted that their participation was to show loyalty to the King.
They came from different classes of people ranging from businessmen, politicians, musicians, students and others.
Prince David Wasajja told participants to always engage in physical activities, not only for fun but also to be healthy.
Buganda Premier, Charles Peter Mayiga, noted the key reasons for the run were to celebrate the Kabaka’s birthday, raise money for the fistula fight and encourage the kingdom’s subjects to be healthy.
Meanwhile, the main 60th birthday celebration is slated for today, Monday 13th April at Bulange Mengo and later a royal dinner at Lubiri Mengo.
At the celebration the Kabaka is to commission Masengere building commonly known as “Bulange Plaza” whose construction had stalled for over 40 years.
