Bribery, vote rigging splits DP leaders in Masaka

Incumbent Democratic Party leaders in Masaka district are protesting the outcome of grass root elections which they lost to party supporters loyal to Suubi, an opposition pressure group.

DP has been conducting grass root elections in Masaka district ahead of the national delegate’s conference slated for June, 2015.

The election covered village, parish and Sub County committees.

But results indicate that members of the pressure group that temporarily abandoned DP in 2010 over lack of transparency secured 98% of the positions.

At least 180 out of the 200 elected committee members in Katwe-Butego and Kimanya-Kyabakuza Divisions are aligned to Suubi.

Based on the result, a group of members led by Henry Busulwa, the Masaka Deputy Mayor spent last night at the DP offices along Hobart Street in Masaka seeking the intervention of senior party officials to invalidate the results.

They say the process was flawed.

Busulwa accuses opponents of bribing voters and falsifying results.

DP members Gonzaga Kisilinya and Molly Nakayiza also describe the election as a mockery.

Kisilinya, the former Chairman of Nyendo-Ssenyange division says members of Suubi group bribed the party electoral commission officials to alter the result.

But DP electoral officials led by Innocent Kateregga and Rayllus Mayanja, the Masaka municipality DP Chairperson described the allegation as irrational.

Mayanja says there is no evidence to back the bribery allegations, a situation which would call for nullification of the poll results.

Michael Mulindwa, the DP Chairman of Nyendo–Ssenyange division says the allegations are baseless.

Masaka Municipality MP Mathias Mpuuga, a member of Suubi, pressure group has however hailed the DP electoral process.

He says the outcome raises hope for internal democracy, whose absence had driven members out of the party.
