Police has blocked Amama Mbabazi from passing through Mbale town enroute to the Cricket ground where he is to hold a public rally.
Police started by closing most roads leading to cricket ground using heaps of soil.
Amama diehards threatened to carry him on shoulders if police refused to allow his convoy to pass through.
Police earlier blocked about three streets to prevent Amama supporters from carrying out a procession across Mbale town.
There was also a little scuffle as crowds tried to push police out of the way as they moved from Pretoria hotel heading for the grounds.
Amama had planned to start with a consultative meeting but later changed to first address a rally in the interest of time.
There was a second scuffle at the entrance of the hall by supporters.
Amama addressed them shortly advising that they channel their grievances through their representation.
After the rally, he would return to the hotel for his consultative meeting.
Supporters overrun police barricades
We are now told the supporters have overwhelmed the police and broken through the barriers.
Moving in large numbers with unequaled determination, Amama supporters forced their way through police barricades and escorted him to the grounds where he will address a rally.
Anti-riot police personnel led by James Ruhweza, further water tankers to block Republic street.
Amama stopped to talk to the officers while crowds led by Bagisu forced their way through and cleared the blockade.
The procession then carried on.
