Opposition leader Kizza Besigye has advised the management of Makerere university to defy a directive by President Yoweri Museveni.
Museveni on Tuesday ordered Makerere university closed with immediate effect.
In a directive on Tuesday evening, Museveni quoted section 26(2) of the universities and tertiary institution act shutting down the institution until further notice.
The president said his action was aimed at ensuring security and safety of all persons.
In response, Besigye said if government can bail out banks and distressed companies, it should be able to pay lecturers’ salaries.
He asked the institution to reject the order by the president.
The lecturers are demanding the University incentive arrears of about Shs 28 billion that accumulated from the past eight months of non-payment.
The university insists it doesn’t have money to pay their arrears.
