Besigye refutes Muntu row, gathers NRM cards

Former Forum for Democratic Change president, Dr. Kizza Besigye, has dismissed a political row between himself and Major General Mugisha Muntu, his rival for the presidential flag bearer.

Speaking to FDC executive members in Gulu, Besigye said responsibilities for the failure to establish party structures lie with Muntu who was the secretary for mobilisation when Besigye was a president.

Muntu responded by likening Dr. Besigye to the Biblical Moses who delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt but failed to get them to the Promised Land, Canaan.

Another report showed that FDC is now divided between Muntu and Besigye with the latter claiming 60% of the support.

Besigye says he has no conflict with Muntu

However, addressing press in Fort Portal on Friday, Besigye referred to Muntu as his leader saying he [Besigye] has known and worked with Muntu for a long time.

“I have made this known to the party officials. I hope the on-going competition for the party presidency will not affect the harmony and unity of the party.”

Besigye said himself and Muntu have known each other for more time than any other person in FDC and have mutual respect for each other.

“On different intervals each one of us had been the boss of the other.”

He agreed there have been attacks on his candidature saying he told his team that “any mad thrown at me, just get a rug and clean the dirt”.

“We must do anything in our power to minimize friction in our party. We make sure that there is minimum or even no hostility among our members,” he advised.

He blamed enemies of the party for trying to cause them problems.

Besigye later addressed a rally in Fort Portal where people contributed money for his campaigns as has been the case in other areas countrywide.

Some ruling party supporters were seen pulling out NRM cards and throwing them into box of donation collections.

He also met delegates of Tooro sub region (Kyegegwa, Kyenjojo, Kabalole and Kamwenge) and those from Rwenzori region (Ntoroko and Bundibugyo) at Palm gardens in Fort Portal town.
