Opposition leader Kizza Besigye says President Yoweri Museveni is still an “illegitimate” president despite a court ruling today that handed him victory.
In their ruling, the nine justices of the Supreme Court said there wasn’t enough evidence to prove that election anomalies affected the outcomes of the February poll.
Court upheld Museveni’s victory and dismissed Mbabazi’s petition without costs.
Addressing press at his home in Kasangati, Besigye said the outcome of the election has not been subjected to an appropriate audit.
“I was the second runner up. I had enough evidence that the election was rigged because most who were affected were my supporters.”
Besigye said he has not been given any chance to present or even assemble required data for an audit process.
“We have a totally illegitimate process that can never make President Museveni legitimate Besigye says Museveni cannot be validly declared president by anyone.”
He said any legal process under their framework, is not meaningful.
“We have an illegitimate president who is trying to over throw the will of people through his will of power.”
Besigye maintained that President Museveni is illegally detaining the rightful winner of the presidential elections over the will of people.
The retired colonel said if he was to go to court, it wouldn’t be to annul elections but to announce the rightful winner of the election.
“All institutions under dictatorship are comprised over the will of the people.”
He said Mbabazi didn’t think he would be the petitioner because the candidate close to the one announced has best chances in the petition.
Besigye says if he was given a chance, he would prove that Museveni didn’t even get 50% of the votes.
