Winnie Byanyima says her husband and former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye now prepares his own meals at Luzira prison.
She visited him on Thursday and reported that he was in a good health condition although there are threats to his life.
“He is in the cell with two others. They cook their own food and eat together. He wears a yellow prisoner uniform but strong physically and in will,” she said after the visit.
Besigye was granted permission to cook his own food while in Luzira prison, according to Uganda Prison Service Spokesperson Frank Baine.
The permission followed a request by Dr Besigye to the authorities in Luzira Maximum Prison to allow him prepare his own meals as a precautionary measure for his life.
He also said he is unsure about the food preparation processes.
Baine told Baine told Uganda Radio Network that Besigye will also have access to a television set and a radio within his prison cell.
According to him, since the prison department is equally constrained to provide special meals under the circumstances, they agreed to an arrangement warranting preferential treatment to Dr Besigye and a few other inmates who reported health complications.
Baine said Besigye requested for ‘extras’ and ‘special treatment’ but due to a constrained budget catering for 4,000 other inmates, they couldn’t manage to grant his wishes.
Byanyima said she will be delivering raw food to him to enable him prepare his own meals.
Together with other officials, Byanyima will be apply for bail to secure Besigye’s freedom.
Besigye was remanded to Luzira prison by Nakawa chief magistrate’s court on Wednesday after he was transferred from his earlier detention and remand at the Moroto government prison on the same charges.
